Fictional Savings Converted to Real Savings

Have a grocery story member card?  Does the cashier point out how much you “saved” on your purchases because you’re a member?  Then, you’re with me so far.

Only I believe that the savings are fictional.  No one pays the “regular” price when the store card is free and without it you pay the inflated price of groceries.

But, how about we play along?  The usual problem with changing your behavior to “save” money is that the “savings” never make it to a bank account or retirement fund.  And as long as the money is in your pocket or checking account, you are likely to feel flush and spend it.

So, I propose that you take each cash register tape from your grocery shopping, and transfer the amount “saved” by reason of your loyalty card to your savings account.

Act on the fantasy that  you’ve saved something and take the additional step to put the savings where it is really set aside for your security, now and later, or for some significant purchase.

Loyalty starts at home.

This tactic was recommended by someone years ago when dealing with coupons. For many people, this is the only way they can afford a purchase.
