Empty Your Closet & Open Up Your Life

Would anyone notice if you wore the same six pieces of clothing for a month?  Apparently not, according to several of the participants in an experiment limiting their wardrobes to six items or less.

Most of us dress for the approval of others.  We spend time and money trying to dress up to our assumed expectations of others.  Seems perhaps it’s wasted time and money.

Take a look at the journals posted by the women from California to Dubai who took the pledge and pared down their wardrobes.  They asked:

  • What do our clothes say about us?
  • Why do spend so much time on what we wear?
  • What happens when we don’t?

One of the women concluded:

I think the main thing that I’m going to take away from this experiment is that, in the grand scheme of things – no one, except you, cares about what you look like. It’s all in your head. And the nice thing is – you’re still you. Whether you feel it or not.

My reaction is the same:  no one is as invested in what you look like as you think.  I couldn’t tell you what my business partner wore yesterday.  She looked neat, appropriate, and attractive.  More than that I could not tell you.

I read a couple of sites today on minimalist living:  two people in a 400 square foot flat, chortling that their possessions would fit in two duffle bags. While I cheer the emphasis on less, I find I’m a moderate in such things.  I feel no compulsion to whittle my closet to 6 or even 12 items nor my house to the size of a closet.

But I also feel more confident that I can wear the same things, again and again, without anyone noticing or caring.
